CAR thief Craig Dutton caused a taxi to crash into a tree – leaving the driver unconscious and a passenger injured.
The 20-year-old stole a BMW from a driveway in Sneyd Green and later took police on a two mile chase which ended in him colliding with a taxi which careered into a tree.
Now Dutton has been jailed for 18 months and banned from driving for three years.
Prosecutor Howard Searle yesterday told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court that Dutton smashed his way into the BMW which the owner had left locked but with the engine running in his driveway at 9am on December 6.
Police saw the stolen car in Rose Street, Northwood, about an hour later.
Officers activated their lights and sounded the sirens but Dutton did not stop.
Mr Searle said: "He continued to drive and made off into Glover Street and Birches Head Road. He picked up speed and exceeded the speed limit.
"He collided with a parked car smashing a wing mirror and then went on to Leek Road towards Milton, causing traffic in the opposite direction to stop."
The court heard Dutton went through red lights and police continued to follow him through Baddeley Green and Stockton Brook.
Mr Searle said: "A taxi started to indicate right and made a manoeuvre right.
"The stolen vehicle struck the left side of the taxi and pushed it into a tree.
"Police pulled alongside the stolen vehicle and arrested Dutton."
The taxi driver was briefly unconscious with a sore temple and neck and back pain. His car was a write-off.
His back seat passenger suffered whiplash and had to go to hospital for treatment to tendon damage to her foot and bruising and swelling. Dutton, of Fitzherbert Road, Sneyd Green, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking without consent, driving while disqualified and without insurance.
Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, conceded Dutton has an unenviable record. He added the defendant hopes he can turn his life around on his release.
Judge Paul Glenn sentenced Dutton to 18 months detention in a young offenders' institution and banned him from driving for three years.
Judge Glenn said: "You have a significant record with previous convictions for aggravated vehicle taking without consent and dangerous driving.
"This involved a police chase in a built up area for two miles. You drove at excessive speed. You overtook, causing oncoming vehicles to evade you. You went through a red light. You struck a vehicle turning right as you went to overtake. You were caught red-handed."
