Casualties trapped in car after horror crash on M1

Casualties trapped in car after horror crash on M1 This is Staffordshire -- CRASH victim Paul Lonergan is lucky to be alive after his car spun around five times on a busy motorway before crashing down a ditch and into trees. The crash left unemployed Paul and his sister trapped in darkness down an embankment in their car at 8.40pm and with little idea where they were on the M1. But Paul called 999 and call handlers tried to piece together the location of the stricken Citreon C3. They were eventually rescued by firefighters more than 30 minutes after the crash. The drama unfolded between junctions 45 and 46 in the Leeds area as the car was caught up in Wednesday night's freak storms. The siblings were returning to Stoke-on-Trent after visiting relatives in Newcastle-upon-Tyne when they hit a patch of deep water on the carriageway. Paul, aged 42, of Duncan Street, Fenton, said: "I didn't have a clue what had happened. My sister was in the car with me and she was screaming. I just kept asking her if she was all right and telling her to calm down. "It was really scary. When we crashed, we went into a load of trees so we couldn't get out of the car. "It was dark and late at night and we didn't have a clue where we were. I couldn't remember which junction we had just passed so I was worried we wouldn't be found." Paul and his sister tried to work out their location by using a sat nav and the internet on their mobile phones. But call handlers at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) stayed on the line until emergency crews arrived to rescue them. Paul added: "They told us they were sending someone but the woman on the end of the phone said she would stay on the line with me until they arrived. I saw some blue flashing lights and told the woman on the phone who then told the fire engines where we were. "Fortunately there wasn't a mark on any of us and we were really lucky. I dread to think what could have happened." Paul and his sister did not need hospital treatment, although the car had to be towed away. WYFRS today praised control staff for helping to find the casualties. Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton said: "I know the control staff who handled this call will probably say they were just part of a team doing their job, but the nature of the call was by any standards outside of the norm. The occupants of the vehicle relied on their common sense, logic and use of technology to ensure that the appropriate emergency response was sent to them. "The control staff stayed on the line throughout the 25-minute call to ensure the occupants of the vehicle were kept calm and ultimately located." Reported by This is 10 hours ago.

Emergency GP describes crash scene in Debdale Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, as one of worst he's seen This is Nottingham --

A GP who helped treat the victims of a road crash which claimed three lives said it was one of the worst he had ever seen.

Two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene following the collision in Debdale Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, which involved a black BMW car, a Honda motorcycle and a Ford Ranger pick-up.

Police named the BMW driver killed in the crash on Friday night as Teresa Mitchell, 38, of Birks Road, Mansfield.

Ricky Goodall, 24, of Barker Avenue, Sutton-in-Ashfield, a front seat passenger in the BMW, was also killed, while motorcyclist Alan Dexter, 47, of Northfield Avenue, Pleasley Vale, Mansfield, also died.

Two other men, aged 22 and 27, who had been passengers in the BMW, and the 29-year-old male driver of the pick-up last night remained in hospital with serious injuries.

Two members of the East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme – a group of doctors who assist injured people in emergency situations – were among the first on the scene.

Kegworth GP Dr Nick Foster said he and Dr Mark Folman, of Newark, tended to the injured.

He said: "It was an horrific scene. We have covered hundreds of these accidents and this was one of the worst, especially taking into consideration the number of fatalities."

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant James Greely, of Notts Police, said: "A tragic case like this is never pleasant but it's even more poignant at this time of year. We are still at a very early stage. This particular case is going to hinge on what the forensic results tell us, and the results of that will take a couple of weeks."

Police have been taking witness statements in the area and studying CCTV to find out more about the incident which happened at around 9.50pm on Friday.

Floral tributes have been left at the scene.

One message read: "Teresa, so sorry, you will be sadly missed."

Another said: "Alan, sleep tight bro. Taken from us too early. Love and miss you always."

A third message left at the scene read: "RIP Angel."

Workers at The Rufford pub in Chesterfield Road South, at the junction with Debdale Lane, witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

Chef Aaron Boulton, 33, of Mansfield Woodhouse, had just finished his shift in the kitchen when he heard the emergency services' sirens and a helicopter overhead.

He said: "We saw police had blocked all the road off.

"It was raining and really cold at the time so I went out to offer the police a cuppa.

"As I went out I could see up to six people stood on the corner of Debdale Lane looking distressed.

"They were smacking the walls and crying on each others' shoulders. At that point I knew something bad had happened."

Linzi Pownall, 36, was duty manager at the pub at the time of the crash.

She said: "It's devastated everyone. We have had a lot of bad times for people here this year and this is just another bad thing to have happened."

The collision happened on a bend in a 40mph speed limit section of the road at about 9.50pm on Friday.

Metal railed fencing at the side of the road was damaged as a result of the crash, while fragments of debris were still in the road.

Amanda Garlick, 53, had been walking back to her home in Debdale Lane after a night out when she saw the road was closed.

She ended up being given a lift home by police via a diversion. She said: "I was told there had been a fatal accident and that I couldn't go down the road.

"It's awful. For their relatives left behind, Christmas is going to be ruined for the rest of their lives."

Paul Walker, 54, who has lived in Debdale Lane for nearly 20 years, said residents had campaigned for an electronic speed sign on the busy road.

He said: "Something like this is sad at any time of the year."

Fire crews from Mansfield, Edwinstowe, Warsop and Tuxford were at the scene for around 90 minutes and had to free one person from the wreckage.

Debdale Lane was closed between Sherwood Rise and Burlington Drive for 12 hours while officers carried out an investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has any information about the incident, is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 886 of December 20. Reported by This is 23 hours ago.

Cheadle crash victim Brian Finney back home in time for Christmas after eight months in hospital

Cheadle crash victim Brian Finney back home in time for Christmas after eight months in hospital This is Staffordshire --

MOTORCYCLIST Brian Finney is home for Christmas after spending eight months in hospital following an horrific A500 crash.

The 44-year-old needed to have his left leg and arm amputated after hitting a lamp-post on April 7.

He was left fighting for his life at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire before recuperating at Burslem's Haywood Hospital for months while he waited for a suitable home.

Now friends and family have raised more than £4,000 to help Brian to move into his specially-adapted bungalow in Mackenzie Crescent, Cheadle.

Former JCB worker Brian, who is known as Snail, said: "I am so grateful for everyone's help and fund-raising. It feels good to be in my home.

"But I don't want to have to rely on other people for everything. I know I could get someone to come and put my bins out but if I can do something then I will. I want to keep my independence."

Brian suffers from the phantom limb condition which gives the sensation that an amputated limb is still attached to his body.

He said: "It is horrendous. I feel like my arm and leg are both still there at times and it hurts.

"I have to put my hand over the end of the limb to convince my brain that they are not there anymore.

"A few times I forgot that I was missing my body parts. I was in the shower when I went to put my left foot down but just fell over and then tried to grab something with my left arm so I just fell to the floor."

Brian believes he is unlucky due to his connection with the number 13.

He was born on May 13, he was brought up in a house with the number 13, before moving to another street with the same number and during 2013 he lost two limbs in the A500 crash and nearly his life.

He has received £1,000 compensation for his injuries.

He added: "Every day can be different.

"I am very up and down but it is early days yet.

"I managed to walk to the shop on my prosthetic leg the other day and I now have a mobility scooter." Friends have rallied round to help Brian, who used to live in Young Street, Cheadle, following the crash near Shelton New Road.

Bird in Hand landlady Kathy Miller and friends helped to raise £480, friend Graham Smith donated a disability scooter, and many friends spent hours by his bedside in hospital.

Businessman Mick Baskerville aged 48, of Prince George Street, Cheadle, said: "I have known Brian for a few years and met him through friends.

"When he had his accident we were all devastated for him and what he had been through."

Mick and wife Suzanne raised £1,700 for Brian through a charity race night and auction.

Mick, who runs Premier Taxis in the town, added: "We just wanted to do something to help him.

"Cheadle is quite a close community so a lot of people were willing to help out and donate things for the auction.

"When something like that happens to someone you know it makes you think how you'd feel in that situation." Reported by This is 1 day ago.
