Man in serious condition in hospital and 12 others injured after double-decker collides with cars in Bradford

A bus driver was impaled by a metal railing spike after his double-decker vehicle collided with a number of cars in Bradford, injuring 12 people.

West Yorkshire police said the crash happened on Manchester Road just after midday on Thursday. The bus hit a number of parked and stationary cars, damaging seven.

According to firefighters, the driver was left with a metal railing embedded in his leg. Watch commander Phil Warden told the Telegraph & Argus: "It had come through the front of the bus, entered his right leg at the bottom of his hamstring and came out right at the top of his leg. The spike had then gone through the back of his seat and embedded itself in the bus."

Fire crews spent more than an hour freeing him from the cab before he was airlifted to Leeds general infirmary.

Warden said: "If it had hit the artery he would have suffered massive blood loss and it could have been catastrophic."

A police spokesman said the driver's condition was serious but stable. Twelve passengers were treated for whiplash and shock.

An investigation into the crash was under way. Reported by guardian.co.uk 7 hours ago.

Barlaston widow welcomes Nepal airlines' EU ban following plane crash which killed her husband Steve Holding This is Staffordshire -- THE wife of a holidaymaker killed in a plane crash in Nepal has welcomed a decision to ban the country's airlines from flying within the EU. Maggie Holding, of Barlaston, says the move by the European Commission is an important step forward, but admits more still needs to be done to improve the country's aviation safety record. Her 60-year-old husband Steve was on a two-week holiday in Nepal when the plane he was travelling in crashed in September 2012. A report following the accident – which killed 19 passengers and the crew – found a catalogue of failures, including findings that the pilot failed to use the correct speeds during take-off, and that the crew was not trained to handle the type of emergency situation. Now the Commission has confirmed that all Nepalese airlines have been added to the EU Air Safety List – which names airlines banned from operating within the EU. It means that airlines from Nepal are prohibited from flying into or in EU airspace, while operators and travel agents in Europe will have to inform travellers of the change if they have made a booking on a Nepalese carrier. Mrs Holding, of Longton Road, said: "This is excellent news which feels like a positive step forward. "But this only relates to flights to Nepal. I would like it made obligatory for European operators and travel agents to warn people about their risks of taking internal flights in Nepal. "Travel companies who offer adventure holidays need to ensure that by using only airlines with high safety standards – 'adventure' begins after travellers have arrived at their destination. "Risk should not be part of their journey. "Lessons need to be learned from the past tragedies if improvements are ever going to be seen." The news of the ban has also been welcomed by Irwin Mitchell's specialist Aviation Law team, which is representing the families of several passengers killed in the fatal Sita Air crash. Clive Garner, Head of the Aviation Law Group at Irwin Mitchell, said: "We are delighted that our concerns have been listened to and hope that this decision will be a wake-up call to both airlines and the aviation authorities in Nepal. "Urgent steps are needed to improve flight safety there, and we hope that this action will provide the incentive to improve standards and better protect aircraft passengers in the future." The tragedy involved a Dornier 228 aircraft crashing to the ground shortly after take-off at Kathmandu-Tribhuvan Airport. It was the sixth fatal incident in the country in a two-year period, and there have been three further crashes in the country since. Stone MP Bill Cash added: "Any sensible measures which prevent unnecessary deaths are, of course, extremely welcome. "It is a tragedy that my constituent died in this way, and more will still need to be done to improve the aviation safety records for a number of countries." Reported by This is 22 hours ago.

Woman, 27, fighting for life after Ball Green car crash on Christmas Day This is Staffordshire --

RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a Christmas Day car crash left a 27-year-old woman fighting for life in hospital.

The female driver was in intensive care last night following the accident in Knypersley Road, Ball Green.

The victim's red Ford Fiesta left the road and hit a wall at around 10.30pm, just near the junction of St Nicholas Avenue. Two passengers, a man and a young child, sustained minor injuries and were treated by paramedics.

The reason for the crash remains unexplained, although no other vehicles were involved.

One resident, Sue Parkes, aged 49, of Knypersley Road, said: "I was so shocked to hear about the crash. Anytime someone gets seriously hurt it is heartbreaking but especially at Christmas. I do hope that she recovers."

Ann Salih, chairman of Norton Residents' Association, also expressed her shock.

She said: "I don't know what happened but I heard there was a crash.

"It is a terrible thing to happen, especially on Christmas Day, on what should be the nicest day of the year.

"I do wish the family well and hope that the driver recovers."

Another resident of Knypersley Road, who did not want to be named, witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

She said: "It was about 10.30pm when I heard a loud bang. My son looked out and shouted 'there has been a crash'.

"I ran across the road to the car. The back window was either down or it had smashed and the car was on the path. The woman looked badly injured. She was out cold. The side of the car had hit the wall.

"When the paramedics came my husband held a torch for them so they could treat the woman before moving her. It was terrible."

The woman, from Stoke-on-Trent, was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire where her condition was described as critical last night.

Police are investigating and have launched an appeal for information.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "The road was closed for around four hours on Wednesday night to allow a detailed examination of the scene of the single vehicle collision by specialist collision investigators.

"We are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the collision or to people travelling in the area who may have seen the red coloured Fiesta before the collision.

"We would like to thank the members of the public affected by the road closure for their co-operation while the scene was examined."

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Lovatt on 101 quoting incident number 499 of December 25. Reported by This is 19 hours ago.

In memory of Rhys Wilkinson: Enterprise trust tribute to teen victim of A645 crash This is Hull and East Riding --

THE parents of an East Yorkshire teenager killed in a car crash have set up a trust to help young people in his memory. Rick and Lianne Wilkinson have created The Rhys Wilkinson Enterprise Trust as a tribute to their 16-year-old son.

Rhys, of Goole, was killed in a head-on crash on the A645 Drax Link Road, near Rawcliffe, in July.

Dad Rick said: "We have decided to set up an enterprise trust, which will help 16 to 25-year-olds follow their dream career path. If they have an idea to start up their own business or are wanting to get into work, the trust will provide mentors and local businessmen and women who can speak to them about their ideas.

"The trust will provide them with the help they need, from drawing up a business plan with them to discussing how they can obtain a loan.

"It will also be the simple things such as advising them to put on a suit before going for an interview."

Rick and Lianne are on the look out for East Yorkshire businesses to join the trust and help support young people in the area.

Rhys was in the first week of his mechanic apprenticeship at Wilco Motosave in Selby when he died.

Rick said: "Rhys was really enjoying his career as a mechanic, he was very business-minded. He always enjoyed making a couple of extra quid where he could.

"Rhys was also very arty. He was always designing and printing his own T-shirts.

"He was also breeding bearded dragons, which he was going to sell to make some money."

A fundraising bike ride to Normanby Park in Scunthorpe, held earlier this year, has already raised more than £7,000 for the trust.

It is hoped the bike ride will become an annual event.

"We couldn't believe how much the sponsored bike ride raised, " Rick said.

"It was much more than we thought.

"Although it is still early days we have been amazed by the support we have had from members of the public."

A memorial bench for Rhys has also been installed at Goole High School by friends of the popular teenager.

The money for the bench was raised from a sponsored run organised by pupils Connor Todd, Lauren Coultard and Aimee Slack.

Connor said: "Rhys was a lovely lad and we have been left devastated by his death.

"We will really miss him and we are glad we have somewhere to go to remember him.

About 15 people took part in the run, which started at Goole Rugby Club.

Rick said: "Lianne and I would like to say a big thank-you to all the people who took part in the run and the bike ride. I hope the school is proud of them all, their parents are proud of them and the kids are proud of themselves.

"Rhys would be really proud and we hope many friendships are made around that bench."

Rhys was a keen rugby player and played regularly for Goole RUFC under-17s team.

Goole High School co-headteacher David Flowitt said: "Rhys was a great student and a fine young man and it is important that the school remembers him.

"The memorial bench is a touching tribute to him, particularly as it was the idea of his friends."

Any businesses interested in getting involved with The Rhys Wilkinson Enterprise Trust can contact reporter Lucy Leeson on 01482 398112. Reported by This is 6 hours ago.
