Striking Swadlincote firefighters leave picket line to attend a potentially life-threatening crash in Midway This is Derbyshire -- FIREFIGHTERS took the decision to leave their picket line after hearing of a potentially life-threatening two-car smash in Derbyshire. It was on Friday shortly before 9.30pm when firefighters on strike at Swadlincote fire station were informed by police of the crash, in Burton Road, Midway. But a spokesman for Derbyshire police said the collision was later found to be not as serious as first thought, with two people suffering minor injuries. The incident involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Peugeot 306. The spokesman said that one of the drivers sped away from the scene. Police are now investigating. The firefighters were on strike because of a continuing national row over pensions and retirement ages. A spokesman for the station said firefighters left the picket line after being informed by the police "that there was a risk to life". But he said they returned to the station once they realised it was not a life-threatening situation. Firefighters were on strike between 6pm and 10pm on Friday and Saturday – the fifth and sixth time they have taken the action. Their strike was not interrupted on Saturday night, with only a fallen tree on Snake Pass and a false alarm in Sandiacre reported to county firefighters during the action. The Government wants firefighters to wait until they are 60 – rather than the current 55 – for their full pension. The union believes 60 is too old for such physical work. Chris Tapp, union secretary for Derbyshire, said the strikes "went well, as expected". He added: "We had overwhelming support from the public again. "What we really want is for Brandon Lewis, the fire minister, to get back round the table and meet with our officials to get this dispute resolved as soon as possible." Speaking about the Swadlincote incident on Friday, Mr Tapp said: "We want to protect the public of Derbyshire. Our fight is not with them, it is with the Government." Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service had urged people to follow simple safety steps to help reduce emergencies during those times. These included leaving extra time for car journeys, taking extra care in the kitchen and responding to weather conditions when driving. Reported by This is 5 days ago.

VIDEO: Lorry and car crash outside Torquay police station This is South Devon -- A MOTHER and daughter say they feel 'lucky to be alive' after narrowly avoiding some flying debris from a 'huge crash' outside Torquay police station. Shortly after 12pm on Monday, a green 7.5-tonne delivery lorry heading down South Street collided with a silver Mitsubishi Space Star, registered to an address in Paignton, which was heading down East Street. People in the police station reported hearing an 'almighty crash' and police officers rushed outside to offer assistance.

It is understood that the middle-aged man who was driving the lorry sustained a minor head injury, while the man in his 70s who was driving the car, and his wife who was a similar age, also sustained minor injuries. They were all taken to Torbay Hospital. Sergeant Lou Costin said: "We had to close the road completely for around 10 minutes while we got the casualties out. There was debris everywhere. "The car started to smoke so as a precaution we called the fire service who sent two appliances." Lindsay Bailey, 47, from Brixham, was driving her Rover 25 up South Street when the collision happened. Her 19-year-old daughter Olivia Vango was also in the car. Mrs Bailey said: "There was a huge crash and the lorry came hurtling towards us. Debris flew over our car. I swerved onto the pavement to avoid the signpost that was flying towards the windscreen. "My daughter is really shaken up. She said if I hadn't swerved we would be dead and I think she's right. We're feeling very grateful to be alive." Reported by This is 5 days ago.

Mum blames unborn baby's kick for serious car crash

Mum blames unborn baby's kick for serious car crash This is South Devon --

A heavily-pregnant driver from Ashburton who crashed into an elderly cyclist blamed the accident on her unborn child kicking her.

Mum-to-be Rebecca Knowles-Dixon, 28, lost control of her car and ploughed into the path of the pensioner on a county road.

The 74-year-old was thrown 'some distance' from his bike and suffered serious chest and head injuries.

But when Knowles-Dixon appeared in court in Torquay she blamed the crash on the unborn child in her tummy.

She claimed a series of 'painful' kicks in her ribs by the baby caused her to flinch behind the wheel and swerve in front of the pensioner.

Knowles-Dixon admitted driving without due care an attention at Torquay Magistrates Court.

She told the court: "I was heavily pregnant at the time when the baby kicked me in the ribs several times and very hard.

"This made me flinch and caused me to have a momentary lapse in concentration.

"I could not have predicted what happened. It's never happened to me before. It's really quite painful."

Knowles-Dixon's Peugeot ploughed into a hedge and veered into the path of the cyclist, the court heard.

The OAP was thrown from his bike and suffered chest and head injuries in the September 6 smash.

He was airlifted to hospital but survived the incident in a 'windy, narrow country road' just outside Ashburton.

Prosecutor Chris Bittlestone said speed was not a factor in the crash because Knowles-Dixon was only doing 20mph.

She said she relied on her car to do festival work and losing it would cause her 'exceptional hardship'.

She also insisted that she always tried to drive as safely as possible.

Magistrates fined her £150 put three points on her driving license.

The court heard pregnant Knowles-Dixon was driving down a hill when she felt her baby kicking and swerved into a hedge.

Her elderly victim, Graham Walden, was cycling through the countryside with his wife when Knowles-Dixon bounced off the bush and ploughed into him.

He was airlifted to hospital with fractured ribs and breathing difficulties.

Knowles-Dixon told police in the wake of the collision that she lost control when she felt the kicking. Her visibility was also poor because there was glare on her windscreen.

The court heard Knowles-Dixon has since had her baby. Reported by This is 4 days ago.
