Motorcyclist who broke his neck and back in 120mph crash set to run marathon This is Leicestershire -- A motorcyclist who broke his neck and back in a 120mph crash has stunned medics who warned he might never walk again. Club racer Nick Matthews, of Market Harborough, suffered catastrophic injuries when he sped headfirst into a wall during a pre-race practice. Friends who witnessed the crash at the Oulton Park circuit, in Cheshire, feared the worst. But after being airlifted to hospital, surgeons managed to save the 47-year-old's life – although they said he might never walk again. Nick, a father-of-three, proved them wrong by walking out of hospital just three weeks later, his body held together by screws and metal rods. He is now training for a marathon to raise funds for the air ambulance that saved his life. "It's been painful and exhausting but I owe it to the guys who saved my life not to be beaten," said Nick. "Life in a wheelchair was not an option for me. I won't break any records or beat any times when I run, but I will cross that finish line." Nick said he was lucky to be alive following the crash, which happened the day before a race in June. Just seven minutes into his practice laps, he crashed at 120mph. Nick, whose father was killed in a motorcycle crash when he was a baby, said he must have forgotten to tighten the brakes. "It was a moment of shock and horror," he said. "I pulled at the brakes and there was nothing." Nick went hurtling into a tyre wall before being crushed by his 160kg bike. He was airlifted to Wythenshawe Hospital, in Manchester, where the full extent of his injuries was revealed. Not only had he broken his neck and back, but also his collarbone, six ribs, sternum, wrist and two fingers. He also suffered a collapsed lung. Seven days later, Nick underwent a five-hour operation to rebuild his back using titanium rods. Three days later, he stood up for the first time. "It was an amazing feeling," said Nick. "All the consultants came to look at me standing up because they couldn't believe it. I felt like a freak show. "I vowed anything was possible and one day I would run a marathon. "One of them joked I must be concussed from head injuries to say such a thing because running would never be possible for me again, but I meant it." Three weeks after the smash, Nick walked out of the hospital unaided. "I felt like the luckiest man alive," he said. Nick has since undergone two further operations, as well as intensive physiotherapy. He ran for the first time last month. "I only went twice around the block, but every step took all I had," he said. "They say a marathon is more about what is in your head, so I kept going." Nick can now run two miles and hopes his training schedule will see him ready for the Berlin Marathon in September. "My friends call me the bionic man because I am full of so much metal," he said. "I owe my life to the people who saved me, rebuilt me and helped me come this far and I want to give something back by showing people what is possible and raising money for the air ambulance that got me to hospital." Two farmers' mercy mission hay lorries crash bound for Somerset floods

Two farmers' mercy mission hay lorries crash bound for Somerset floods This is Somerset -- Two lorries laden with hay bound for flooded Somerset crashed in one day in this week's storms, with one driver on a mercy mission dying, it emerged yesterday. The tragedy happened before the National Farmers' Union issued an appeal to farmers across the country not to set off on treks with tonnes of fodder to help flood-stricken farmers, but instead contact them and promise to deliver it when called upon in the coming weeks. On a stormy day on Wednesday, the first tragedy happened on the M4 in Wiltshire, when a Volvo artic driven by a 61-year-old from Cornwall crashed into the ditch heading west between Chippenham and Bath, just past Leigh Delamare services. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It is understood that the lorry was heading to Somerset to deliver hay, and also that the coroner's investigations will focus on the driver's health rather than the windy weather as a cause of the tragedy. Then, hours later, a lorry that had just collected hay in north Wiltshire was blown off the B4042 in Brinkworth, near Malmesbury. The lorry was an example of the corporations helping out with the farmers' relief effort in Somerset: it was a Tesco cab pulling an Eddie Stobart trailer laden with hay. Police said the trailer wheels clipped a rain-soaked sodden verge, and the lorry driver lost control and the entire vehicle rolled over a hedge, coming to rest on its side in a field. The road was closed for much of the afternoon as the lorry and its precious load was retrieved – the driver walked away from the crash unhurt. Yesterday morning, with farmers arriving with lorry loads of hay every day, the NFU urged farmers not to take it upon themselves to just turn up to the Somerset Levels, where farmers have had to evacuate their animals to higher ground as thousands of acres are left underwater. The NFU said the farmers will need the fodder for months to come, even when the water has eventually gone, and are asking farmers who want to help to pledge to bring fodder, feed and straw when asked in the weeks ahead. NFU regional director Melanie Squires described the response so far as 'magnificent' and offered 'huge thanks' for the support. "What we now need are the pledges of fodder or straw, rather than the actual deliveries, so that we can call upon people's generosity as and when it is required over the coming weeks and months, when the waters finally abate and farmers return to face a fetid swamp," she said. "Anyone who wants to provide fodder and bedding should contact us via south.west@nfu.org.uk or on 01392 440700 so we can log all the offers and match them up with those in need when that need arises," she added.
