Update: Family escape unscathed after freak crash in Seabridge This is Staffordshire -- AN ELDERLY motorist and his two grandsons escaped unscathed after their car crashed through a wall, clipped a house and landed on top of another vehicle parked in a driveway. The freak accident happened in Seabridge, Newcastle, at around 5.30pm on Saturday. Michael Podmore was shocked to find his Peugeot lying underneath a Mercedes car outside his Seabridge Lane home. The driver, thought to be in his 70s, is believed to have been returning from a family day out watching the Port Vale match when he lost control of the luxury car. By sheer fluke, neither he nor his teenage grandsons were badly injured. The vehicle had travelled over a bank and across a six-foot wall, taking out a large chunk of the bricks. It then headed towards the house, clipping the Peugeot and forcing the parked car onto its side. Michael, aged 70, who lives with his partner Beryl Kettle, said: "We were in the kitchen at the time and I was making cheese sauce when we heard a very loud rushing noise. Beryl looked outside, but did not see anything. "About 10 minutes later, a teenage boy knocked on the door in quite a state. "He said, 'There has been an accident' and Beryl said, 'Where?'. We didn't realise that it was on our drive. "We looked out and the cars were in the most spectacular position. Our car was on its side and the Mercedes was balanced on top of it. I have no idea how it happened." Beryl, aged 72, added: "Our car had been flipped over. The conifers had been flattened and a wooden trailer had been smashed. "If someone had told me before that a car could have done that I wouldn't have believed them. "We went outside and the old man was lying on the ground. I think that the boy who knocked on our door had pulled him out. "We got blankets because he was lying in the cold on the muddy grass and waited for the ambulance to arrive. "I am amazed that no one was badly hurt and I am shocked at how it happened. "If our car hadn't been there, they would have come straight into the house." Michael, who has lived in Seabridge Lane for more than 40 years, described it as a 'miracle' that nobody was seriously hurt. He said: "The young lad came back to find his grandfather's teeth that were in the front garden. He was such a lovely boy and he was very shaken up." Two ambulances and a paramedic area support officer attended the scene. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "When the emergency services arrived, they found a car which had reportedly left the road, cleared a six-foot wall and clipped the side of a house before landing precariously on top of a parked car. "The driver of the car was given a full assessment by crews and immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board due to the mechanism of the crash. "One of the grandsons sustained shoulder pain. "All three were taken to University Hospital of North Staffordshire as a precaution. "Given the nature of the crash, it was miraculous that no one was more seriously or even fatally injured."
