This is Nottingham -- A MAN died after a motorbike crash in Woodthorpe. The 29-year-old was a pillion passenger on a Honda CBR which crashed in Arno Vale Road near to the junction with Somersby Road. The incident happened on the leafy residential street at about 11.25pm on Saturday, January 25, just metres away from Arno Vale Junior School and opposite the Arno Vale recreation ground. The man was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Gurdy Iqbal owns a newsagents on Somersby Road, just metres away from the junction where the accident happened. He said: "I heard about it this morning (Sunday), the people opposite told me when I opened the shop. "We were closed when it happened." He added: "It's sad. I've never heard of anything like this at all before." It comes after a number of recent deaths on the counties roads. In December, the tally of fatalities reached 12 - more than double that of the same month the previous year. Eight people were killed between December 17 and 29, the worst toll of road deaths over a festive period for years. Speaking at the time, Nottinghamshire Police Chief Inspector, Andy Charlton said: "As an overall December figure, we now have the highest for several years. "You would have to go back six years to get a total even comparable." And there have now been four more deaths in January. Two students died after crashing into a tree in Carlton Road, Sneinton. Abubakr Ahmed, 22, and Janaid Shafiq, 19, were in a Vauxhall Corsa which smashed into a tree in Carlton Road, Sneinton, on January 7. The two Nottingham Trent University students died at the scene. In another incident, Brett Cooke, from Clipstone, was riding a blue Suzuki motorbike in Crown Farm Way, on the Crown Farm Industrial Estate, Forest Town, at around 7.30am on Monday, when the vehicle collided with the central reservation. The 27-year-old died on the way to hospital. Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident in Arno Vale Road on Saturday night to call 101 with incident number 948 of January 25.
