A French driver has been banned from driving after he was caught veering across the road while drunk.

Dimitry Cougy was arrested at 5.15am on Thursday after he was spotted driving his Volkswagen Passat erratically in Marine Drive, Brighton.

When officers stopped Cougy, 20, of Villotte St Seine, France, he was breathalysed and found to be twice the drink-drive limit.

Cougy was charged with drink-driving and remanded in custody to appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty the next day.

He was banned from driving for 20 months, fined £200 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Superintendent Jane Derrick, the head of Sussex Police's roads policing unit, said: "Within 36 hours of us catching Cougy, justice had been done and he had been banned from the roads.
