Former Liberal Democrat leader and wife left upset after being in three-car collision which killed Mark Hurford

The former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown was left "very upset" after being involved in a car crash in which another man died.

The peer was being driven by his wife, Jane, when the collision occurred on a country road near his home in Somerset on 24 January.

The Ashdowns' Renault Scenic was involved in the three-vehicle crash, which killed Mark Hurford, 49, from Crewkerne.

A Ford Transit and the Vauxhall Corsa driven by Hurford were the other vehicles involved in the incident on the A356.

Ashdown said that after the crash, which left his wife shaken but uninjured, he "immediately stopped traffic coming from the other direction" and went over to check for a pulse on Hurford, who was dead by the time he reached him.

"My wife felt shocked. The police and ambulance turned up and we spent the next two hours going through the procedures that you have to have," he said.

Ashdown got in touch with Hurford's family to offer his condolences after the crash.

"I spoke to his wife over the weekend and expressed my condolences," he said. "My wife and I are very upset for the other family."

Avon and Somerset police have appealed for witnesses to the collision, which also left a 29-year-old passenger in the Transit with a dislocated shoulder and back injuries. Reported by guardian.co.uk 12 hours ago.
