Bus driver airlifted to hospital after crash with tractor in Rothley This is Leicestershire -- A bus driver has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a tractor. Emergency services were called to North Street, in Rothley, at just before 10.30am, today. It is thought the two vehicles collided in the road, sending the bus careering into a stone wall. Construction workers on a nearby building site witnessed the crash, just 20 yards from The Royal Anglian pub. Landlord Louis Louis (CORR), was preparing for a delivery when he heard the smash. "I heard it first, there was a loud screech, following by a bang, and I ran outside to see what it was," said the 44-year-old innkeeper. "There was a tractor reversing in the middle of the road and a bit further on a bus was embedded in a stone wall. Builders from the site over the road were running towards the bus to help. "I saw about 10 passengers onboard who were given oxygen by firefighters when they arrived. "It looked pretty nasty!" Another villager who came across the aftermath of the crash but did not want to be named, said she saw two people trapped. "The front of the bus was completely embedded in the wall - I'm not sure how it happened because it's a straight road," she said, adding: "The police and fire were rushing out there as I went by and then they closed off every road around it." Fire crews from Loughborough and Birstall were joined by the services technical rescue unit from Leicester. They used cutting gear to remove front panels of the vehicle to release the driver. A spokesman said: "The collision appeared to be between a bus and a tractor, causing the bus to crash into a stone wall "Two people were trapped inside the vehicle, one of whom was the driver. "The ambulance service and air ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and the driver removed and taken to hospital by helicopter." He said the second person trapped was an "elderly person who was unable to get off the bus". A police spokeswoman said: "The collision involved a single-decker bus and a tractor. "There were a few hurt on the bus but the seriousness of the injuries is not yet known. "One person was taken by air ambulance to the University Hospital of Coventry at Walsgrave. Their injuries are serious but not thought to be life-threatening." North Street remains closed as crash investigators examine the scene. Reported by This is 9 hours ago.
